Yearbook (Studies in Surveillance) is a catalog for a school that publishes no yearbook and keeps almost no archive.


312 pages in three parts. The book opens with Studies in Intelligence (The Death of Mythology) a footnoted essay on the institution's history, from the Disneys' founding through the 2026 commencement, built from letters and documents held in the California Institute of the Arts Institute Archives. Studies in Surveillance holds the four thesis works. Selected Works collects nine more, made across two years in the Photography and Media program. Fifteen works in all, with essays by Daniel M. Pope and Alex Lavayen, an interview with me by Zack Raffin, an interview I recorded with Kenny Scharf, and a glossary of four terms of my own. Yearbook signature pages by faculty and peers open and close the book. 

For fifty years the school had no security cameras. Its mythology rests on that absence -unrecorded events, and accounts that stay rumors because the people involved want protection. In 2026 the administration installed them.


Every copy of this catalog is a photocopy of one master. The edition is open, sold at cost, and closes if the master is lost or deteriorates. The three-ring binder and the punched margin are the format institutions use for their own documents, files that are added to and amended rather than bound.


It is the catalog of an exhibition and the works and essays around it, produced without an institution, inside an institution.
